Heat Pumps & Ductless Mini-Splits

A heat pump is one machine doing both jobs: moving heat out of your house in summer and pulling heat into it in winter. Modern inverter-driven heat pumps hold useful capacity far colder than their reputation suggests, and paired with a backup heat source they are an efficient, quiet way to condition a Missouri home through both seasons.

Ductless mini-splits solve the problems ductwork cannot. The finished attic that is always ten degrees off. The sunroom nobody uses in July. The garage workshop, the converted basement, the addition that was tied into a duct system already at its limit. A mini-split puts an independently controlled zone exactly where you need one, with no ducts to run and no capacity stolen from the rest of the house.

Because a heat pump runs far more hours per year than a furnace does, it needs a technician who understands reversing valves, defrost boards, outdoor sensors and balance-point settings. We diagnose the symptoms owners actually notice — ice building on the outdoor coil, cool air from the vents in heating mode, a unit that never shuts off, auxiliary heat running when it should not be — and correct the underlying control or refrigeration fault instead of masking it. On dual-fuel systems, setting the balance point correctly is the difference between leaning on inexpensive heat pump heat and quietly burning hundreds of dollars of backup heat all winter.

Installation quality matters more on these systems than on almost anything else we touch: line-set routing, a deep vacuum, flare quality, condensate slope and indoor-head placement determine whether the system runs beautifully for fifteen years or leaks refrigerant in three.
